The Family Life Department, Family Service of Eastern Nova Scotia, is committed to providing quality educational programming to individuals and to families. Our agency social workers, professionals experienced in helping people deal with the challenges and concerns of family living, offer a variety of family life education programs.
Antigonish Area
Life After Loss/Growing Through Grief
Course is intended for people who have experienced major significant losses in the past 12 to 18 months. Focus will be on enabling the healing process. You will be given to the opportunity to: identify and understand the feelings and issues involved in loss, work through the related stages of letting go, and recreate a new future.

Everybody's A Somebody
A program designed to focus on the needs of adolescent girls. Topics will include: self-esteem, peer pressure, interpersonal relationships, creating your identity--who you are as a person and standing up for yourself. Assertiveness and enhancement of self-confidence would be overall goals.

Guysborough Area
Life Topics for Teenage Boys
An interactive discussion group to help participants learn about 5 topics of importance for teenage boys in today's world. Topics of discussion will be: anger management; social skills development; self-esteem; dating relationships; drug and alcohol presentation and parent abuse.

Effective Co-Parenting After Seperation and Divorce
A six week educational program designed to help parents raide their children in a co-operative environment following seperation and divorce. Topics to be explored are: communication; parent/child relationship; how to be sensitive to the child's needs and problem solving.

Teen Talk
A group for Teenage girls ages 13-16 to discuss the challenges and joys of being a teenager. Topics include: self-esteem; developing healthy, postive relationships; sexuality and dating; nutrition and body image; communication and problem solving skills as well as effective ways of managing stress.

Effective Parenting After Seperation and Divorce
Seperation/Divorce is a difficult experience for children. This program is designed to help parents develop a cooperative parental relationship. Topics include: developmental stages and the impact of seperation/divorce on children; communication strategies to deal with conflict; develop a supportive environment as parents.

Changing Jobs in Mid-Life: A Balanced Guide to Personal Fulfillment
Mid-life is a particularly challenging time to find or change jobs. Yet we can also incorporate our rich life experiences to make our special contribution to the world. This program is for the unemployed or those changing jobs in mid-life. It is designed to help you harness your own personal power of body, mind and spirit in transforming and achieving your owrk related goals.

Fantastic Families
A comprehensive parenting program covering issues such as child care challenges, parenting styles, ages and stages, communication, respect, rules and responsibilities, as well as anger and stress.

New Glasgow Area
Cooperative Parenting and Divorce
An eight session program aimed at helping divorcing or divorced parents reduce parental conflict and understanding child's issues in divorce. Topics to be covered include: art of co-parenting; anger management; communication; conflict resolution and understanding child's behavior.

CALM: Controlling Anger and Learning to Manage It
Calm is a 24 session, educational program to reduce anger, violence and emotional loss of control among adolescents. Topics to be discussed include: understanding anger and emotions; managing anger triggers; negative thought stopping; assertiveness and communication; using skills in the real world.

Mother/Daughter Choices
A unique program for grade six girls and their mothers, is designed to prepare girls for the kinds of decisions they will be making as they move into Junior High School. The goals of the program are to encourage communication between mothers and daughters at this important time in their lives and to motivate the girls to expand their vision of themselves and their capabilities. As well, the girls will learn valuable life skills such as goal setting, problem solving, decision making and assertive, responsible behavior.

Port Hawkesbury Area
Care for the Caregiver
A six week program designed for individuals who assist a spouse, parent, relative or friend with the activities of daily living. Topics will include: the aging process, stress management, communication skills and assertiveness training.
