Teen Pregnancy
Whether you are pregnant or not, it is important for you to decide if parenting is for you. Getting pregnant is easy, but being a parent is much more difficult. It's a skill that, to be learned, takes time and a great deal of patience.
Ask Yourself
- What are my goals in life?
- How and when does a child fit in with these plans?
- How would I support a child?
- Will the father be by my side? If not, can I raise a child on my own as a single parent?
- Where would we live?
- Do I have emotional support from my family and friends?
- What do I have to offer a child?
- Am I ready for a 19-year, 24 hour-a-day responsibility?
- Do I like kids?
- Could I give up my personal needs for the sake of a child?
- Am I ready to change my life and give up what I am used to, in order to care for a child?
- Am I responsible enough to care for both a baby and myself?
If you do decide to become a parent, seek guidance and support from others such as: your School Guidance Counsellor; other young parents; your minister or priest; Mental Health Clinic Counsellors; Family and Children's Services staff; Department of Health; Community Health Nurses; La Leche League Representatives.
If you are pregnant and feel frightened, confused, overwhelmed, alone, worried or excited......we can help!
At Child Welfare, you will find people who respect you, are concerned about you and provide the help you need.
