Counselling is one of the core services provided by our agency. The counselling may be of a brief or long-term nature depending on the complexity of the situation and the needs of the client.
In the confidential process of therapy; individuals, couples and families enter into a relationship with a clinical social worker to achieve some insight into their lives, in an effort to help resolve any difficulties they may be having coping on a day-to-day basis.
Some issues that people may seek assistance with are:
- Personal Functioning Issues, ie. Low self-esteem, stress, anger management, etc.
- Couple Relationships: Marital/Pre-Marital Conflict
- Family Relationships: Parental/Child/Adolescent Conflict
- Abuse Issues: Adult and/or child abuse (physical, sexual, emotional)
- Depression: (Situational/ Reactive Depressions)
- Grief Reactions and/or Bereavement
- Adjustment to health and/or medical issues
- Financial pressures/ Unemployment
- Sexual Assault/ Rape
- Family Violence
Agency clinical social workers and other professional therapists are licensed by the Nova Scotia Association of Social Workers and the Association of Professional Counsellors of Nova Scotia.
Individuals can self-refer to Family Service or may be referred by a friend, family member, doctor, teacher, etc. Individuals interested in receiving therapy, should contact the nearest office of Family Service of Eastern Nova Scotia.
Once you have taken the first step to call Family Service, you will be guided through a series of brief questions as part of the intake process. All information provided is held in the strictest confidence. The intake questionnaire is then passed on to one of the social workers/counsellors who will contact you to complete the intake process.
Individual sessions are approximately one hour in duration. Family or couple sessions may last longer, but will not exceed 1½ hours.
Fee for service is based on a sliding fee scale which takes both family size and family income into consideration. The fee will be established with your counsellor at the commencement of therapy. A fee for service is only charged when people are financially able to pay.
